We are fighting for a new era in fashion that respects and reveres Mother Earth, with every step of the production journey. CAMILLA is committed to an endless fight to care for and protect our planet. That includes minimising our carbon footprint, maximising material efficiency, and developing recycled packaging. Our sourcing and fabric strategies underpin our commitment to consciously creating beautiful works of art with minimal impact on Mother Earth. Just as we work with highly skilled artisans to create our collectible works of art, we also align with a very select group of manufacturers to produce them.
CARBON EMISSIONS
CAMILLA completed Greenhouse Gas (GHG) assessments across scopes 1, 2 and 3 with the subsequent implementation of key emissions reduction goals and initiatives. We plan to action a carbon assessment every two years.
WASTE MANAGEMENT
CAMILLA commits to using a waste management system to measure our performance across cardboard and paper recycling, plastics, e-waste and landfill disposal as part of our ongoing journey to reduce our carbon footprint.
RESTRICTED SUBSTANCES
CAMILLA commits to limiting the use of harmful substances throughout our supply chain. We require our suppliers to adhere to our Restricted Substance List (RSL) and Harmful Substances Policy (HSP) and commit to testing to ensure compliance. Many of our suppliers were audited with the 4 Pillar SEDEX system that includes checking that usage and discharge of hazardous waste is measured. In the future we plan to encourage all suppliers to include their environmental performance in auditing.
ETHICAL SOURCING
As a SEDEX member, CAMILLA commits to fostering a sustainable and ethical sourcing program across our supply chain.
MATERIALITY CERTIFICATIONS
CAMILLA commits to designing and manufacturing packaging in line with the following Sustainable Packaging Principles.
ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY
CAMILLA commits to reducing adverse environmental impacts while actively supporting sustainability. Some of the changes we've undertaken this year include commitments to:
Our preferred materials reflect our commitment to conscious creation. We aim to use natural fibres. Outside of our natural fibre choices, we aim to use recycled, regenerated and sustainably sourced and ecologically sound materials wherever we can.
SILK
Silk is at the core of all our collections: we love this renewable natural material for its beauty, drape, and luxurious feel on the body. Silk is biodegradable, uses less water, chemicals and energy to produce than most other fashion fibres. Our treasured silk has many positives. Importantly, silk prints beautifully. It is considered a more sustainable fibre. It is beautiful to wear; it breathes, it floats and feels like pure luxury.
We ensure the hand feel and quality are the focus of attention while we manufacture. Closely we monitor the weight, the thread count and the handle. Depending on what type of garment and the end use, we use a variety of silk qualities, finishes and weights.
Our silk is woven in China and printed mainly in India, but also China. These mills are socially and environmentally audited through third party verification. Ensuring we have the best quality yarn is important to us and with these mills we have long standing relationships.
SUSTAINABLE SWIMWEAR
Nearly all our swimwear is lovingly crafted using Econyl®, a sustainable premium Italian textile, recycled from regenerated materials salvaged from our oceans. Our swimwear is perfect on the body and created from nylon waste, it is better for our environment. Our mens boardshorts are all made from a polyester that is made from post-consumer waste, PET bottles predominantly. The textile is approved by the Global Recycled Standard. Our priority with synthetic fibres is that wherever possible we choose regenerated or recycled versions. Recycled nylon and polyester are well embedded into our kids, mens and womens swimwear.
NATURAL FIBRES
Natural fibres make up over 80% of our fibre usage. Camilla recognises that our fibre choices are a very important decision in reducing our impact on the environment. Silk will always be our main love, but there are many other beautiful fibres we love to explore. We measure and analyse our fabric and material usage to guide us to prioritise the fabrics that have the lowest impact on the planet and people. We know that choosing organic cotton is a more sustainable solution, it is better on the soil, waterways and the farmers.
We have introduced our cotton graphic tees are made with certified Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) cotton. We have made the move to organic cotton to ensure we are as kind to the environment as we can be. Where we choose cotton across our other fabrications like our poplin, we have also introduced organic options.
We also love using linen, its breathable, durable, soft against the body, and prints beautifully. It is a natural renewable and biodegradable fibre we look forward to using more and more.
CAMILLA is committed to using responsibly sourced materials in all our products and ensuring the welfare of any animals involved in the supply of our products is respected.
Our CAMILLA Animal Welfare Policy outlines to our supply chain our position on animal-derived products. CAMILLA bans the use of endangered species, angora and other rabbit hair, exotic skins and feathers and real fur.
LEATHER
Leather is a tactile material that we use across our ready-to-wear and accessories collections. When cared for properly, leather can last for many years. At CAMILLA, we only use leather that is a by-product of the food industry. Additionally, only cow, buffalo, sheep, goat or pig leather (or skin), sourced from producers with best practice in animal husbandry can be used in CAMILLA products. The leather collections are made in India, China and Brazil. All CAMILLA leather is supplied by manufacturers and tanneries with Leather Working Group (LWG) Certification. These producers belong to the LWG, which is a certification standard that aligns environmental priorities, best practices and work transparency.
FEATHERS AND DOWN
CAMILLA occasionally uses feather trims on limited edition pieces. All feathers are sourced from producers with good animal husbandry practices and must be a by-product of the food industry. Feathers and down are certified to the Responsible Down Standard (RDS). Suppliers must provide information on the source of the feathers, place of origin, species and breed at early development stages.
FAUX FUR
We refuse to use real fur or pelts in any of products or trims. We only use faux fur, made from synthetic fibres produced to look natural.
Little things add up over time, so from packaging to swing tags, we are committed to reducing our environmental footprint.
We have reviewed our use of soft plastics and packaging materials and developed a materiality strategy in line with APCO’s Sustainability Packaging Guidelines that focuses on environmentally preferred materials and works towards eliminating single-use plastics.
To assist in sustainable design and manufacturing of our packaging, we work towards these Sustainable Packaging Principles:
PLASTICS
OCEAN BOUND PLASTIC POLYBAGS
It's the plastics that you don't see that hurt our earth the most. In our quest to reduce plastic usage throughout the business, we identified the major soft plastic component to be the use of polybags that each of our products are wrapped in.
We use Pollast!c Mailers made by The Better Packaging Co to send most of our treasures to you. These are crafted from 100% ocean bound plastic, protecting our beautiful oceans from pollution. Our warehouse and boutiques, when using plastic also use only these Pollast!c bags.
To ensure transparency, each mailer has a unique tracking number to trace the plastic back to source, and are the lowest carbon form of packaging available to commercial businesses.
Our aim is to phase out problematic and unnecessary single–use plastics from all our packaging and wider operations. We still have a way to go and believe in embedding this throughout our business.
RECYCLED GARMENT BAGS
All our garment suit bags are now made from 100% RPET (Recycled Polyethylene Terephthalate), made from post-consumer recycled plastic bottles.
We want our garments protected and safe, our choice of garment bag is light, durable and protective - and best of all made from plastics that would otherwise be landfill.
PREVENTING MICRO PLASTICS
Whenever we wash clothes made with synthetics, little plastic fibres from our textiles travel from our washing machine into the wastewater, making their way to Mother Earth’s rivers, lakes and oceans. These particles break down further, and are ingested by our sea creatures, causing them harm.
Scientifically proven to counteract the microplastic pollution caused by clothes washing by retaining these fibres and not losing any of their own, GUPPYFRIEND® laundry bags are available to purchase via our website, so that you can wash your CAMILLA treasures in peace.
PAPER + CARDBOARD
Luxury shouldn’t be wasteful, so we design with circularity in mind for our products and packaging.
Our store bags are recyclable. We can trust that FSC Certified paper products are made from trees that are harvested responsibly, so there is no net loss of forests over time. Forests with irreplaceable values, such as old-growth forests, are identified and maintained in order to reverse deforestation and fight climate change.
Our tissue paper, online shipping boxes and premium boxes are all recyclable. Developed with APCO’s Sustainable Packaging Guidelines, our packaging suite follows those key guidelines.
For our labelling suite, our swing tags are FSC® Certified, woven labels made from 60% recycled yarn, satin tape and swing tag cord plaque created from 100% recycled polyester, and button bags from 100% recycled material and FSC® Certified.
At CAMILLA we understand that as part of the fashion industry we need to play our part in closing the loop. The end of life of the garment is as important as the production of it.
Our emphasis is on longevity and value. Each piece is designed to be loved right up until it can no longer be worn.
Our key commitments to circularity:
Creation of high quality, investment pieces that last longer.
Use of natural fibres designed for longevity, which can be used again once they have reached the end of their lifespan.
Support and encouragement for customers to extend the desirable life of their pieces through storage and cleaning options, restoration and alterations.
CAMILLA has a thriving re-sale market. Many global platforms are strong markets for CAMILLA products. We will continue to explore partnerships and technology that facilitates re-sale.
